We talk a lot about ceilings, walls and lighting in this trade — and almost nothing about the eight square feet under our own feet. Odd, considering it's the one surface every person in the house touches every single day, in every season, for the next fifteen to twenty years.
This issue exists because we kept having the same conversation with clients across Ranchi and Jharkhand: "just tell me what to put down." There's no single right answer — a Kota-stone verandah, a matte marble-look living room, a herringbone-laid study — but there is a right way to decide. That's what we've built here: the trends actually showing up on 2026 spec sheets, an honest ₹/sq ft map with no vendor spin, and the layered engineering that separates a floor that lasts twenty years from one that needs redoing in five.

Flooring isn't a finishing touch anymore — it's one of the fastest-growing categories in global construction, and Asia-Pacific is where most of that growth is happening.
A beautiful surface is the last of five layers. Skip one, and the floor above it will eventually tell on you — cracked grout, hollow tiles, a plank that lifts in monsoon.
Porcelain, PGVT, SPC, terrazzo or stone — the only layer anyone sees, and the one every trend in this issue is about.
Large-format slabs need full back-buttering and a notched trowel, not the thin dab that gets away with smaller tiles.
A 30–50mm cement screed corrects the slab's imperfections — skip it under large-format tile and you'll see lippage within a year.
Bathrooms, kitchens and balconies need a membrane here before anything else goes down — the single most skipped step on a budget site.

Fewer fragile statement materials, more engineered surfaces that look luxurious and survive monsoons, hard water and joint-family traffic. Here are six of the ten trends we're specifying most often right now.
Sizes up to 1600×3200mm, often just 6–9mm thick, laid with near-zero grout lines. Fewer joints mean less visible dirt and a room that reads noticeably larger — a real win in compact city apartments. It's vitrified-grade, so water absorption stays under 0.5%.
The single biggest shift in Indian homes this year. Real Italian marble runs ₹250–1,500+/sq ft, stains with turmeric and lemon, and needs periodic polishing. Marble-look PGVT delivers the same veined drama with none of the sealing or etching worries.
Real hardwood swells and warps in monsoon humidity — wrong for most Indian climates. SPC's stone-polymer core gives the warm plank look while staying 100% waterproof, termite-proof and scratch-resistant, clicking straight over an existing floor.
Marble, granite and glass chips suspended in a warmer binder, now available as precast tiles and large-format slabs rather than only poured in-situ. It taps a real nostalgia — many of us grew up on mosaic floors just like it — and hides dirt beautifully.
With marble-look PGVT and wood-look SPC now affordable, homeowners want a richer layout, not just a richer material. The trade-off is real: angled cuts at every edge add roughly 30–50% to laying cost and 10–15% wastage over a straight grid.
The palette has moved from cool greys to sand, greige, honey and travertine tones that flatter Indian light and hide dust between mops. In wet zones, we specify slip ratings of DIN 51130 R10 or higher — R11–R13 for bathrooms and outdoor steps.
Material-only figures, before 18% GST, adhesive, grout and skirting. Large-format and pattern work add meaningfully to labour — treat these as the starting line, not the final quote.
