Editor's Note
"Clients redesign a wall every few years. They almost never redesign a ceiling — which is exactly why it's worth getting right the first time."
— Swati Suman, Managing Director, Neev Spaces

Of every surface in a room, the ceiling is the one clients think about last and live with the longest. It hides your wiring, shapes your lighting, and quietly sets the mood of a room from directly above eye level — yet most homeowners choose it in five minutes, at the very end of a project.

This issue is our attempt to fix that. If it helps you picture your own ceiling more clearly, pass it along to someone mid-renovation, save the page that matches your room, and tag us once your false ceiling is lit up and finished — we genuinely love seeing them. The more this handbook travels, the more Jharkhand homes get ceilings that were actually planned, not just installed.

01 — The Catalogue

Eight ceiling styles, decoded

Every false ceiling on the market is built from one of these eight approaches. Know the family, and you can judge any design a contractor proposes — on cost, ceiling-height impact, and how it will hold up in an Indian home.

NS-01

Flat Gypsum Board

Smooth, minimal, and fast to install. The default choice for modern homes — clean enough to disappear, sturdy enough for recessed LED downlights.

₹75–150/sqft15–20 yrs
NS-02

POP Cornice & Motifs

Plaster of Paris moulded into floral borders, jaali patterns, and ornate cornices. India's traditional choice, still popular in Tier-2 cities for its craftsmanship.

₹45–120/sqft8–12 yrs
NS-03

PVC Panel Ceiling

Waterproof, lightweight interlocking panels. Not the most stylish option, but unbeatable where moisture rules out gypsum or POP.

₹40–95/sqft10–15 yrs
NS-04

Wood Slat / Baffle Ceiling

Linear timber or bamboo battens spaced for rhythm and acoustic softness. The defining "biophilic canopy" look of 2026.

₹200–400/sqft15–20 yrs
NS-05

Metal Grid Ceiling

Aluminium or GI grid panels, standard in offices and retail for easy access to services above. Durable, but reads more commercial than residential.

₹90–180/sqft20+ yrs
NS-06

Coffered / Geometric Grid

A recessed grid of square or hexagonal panels, borrowed from Renaissance architecture. Adds real depth and grandeur to living and dining rooms.

₹120–280/sqft15+ yrs
NS-07

Cove & Tray Lighting

A curved or stepped perimeter that hides the light source entirely, throwing a soft, diffused glow upward. The single most-requested detail of 2026.

+₹35–60/sqftAdd-on detail
NS-08

Glass & Stretch Ceiling

Backlit stretch fabric or glass panels for a glowing, gallery-like effect. A striking, high-maintenance statement piece for one feature area.

₹250–500/sqft10–15 yrs
02 — The Numbers

Choosing by height, cost, and how long it lasts

The single biggest constraint in Indian ceiling design isn't style — it's height. We mapped what's actually achievable at each ceiling height, then priced every option in real 2026 rupees.

A false ceiling typically drops height by 4–12 inches — always confirm slab-to-floor height before locking a design.
