Editor's Note

Why we made this issue

Wood has always been the material Indian homes reach for when they want to feel finished, warm, and unmistakably lived-in. But choosing it well — the right species for our humidity, the right pattern for the room, the right budget for the plan — is where most projects stall. That gap is exactly why this issue exists.

Inside, we've pulled together the numbers that matter (what wood flooring actually costs in India right now), the patterns worth specifying in 2026, and the maintenance habits that make a floor last decades instead of years. It's the same research our own design team uses on-site, condensed into one guide.

If it helps you picture your next room a little more clearly, do us a favour — share it with someone renovating, tag us in your moodboard, or simply keep it open on a second tab while you plan. The more people reading well-researched design guides instead of ad-driven listicles, the better the industry gets for everyone.

How It's Built

Anatomy of an engineered wood floor

Most Indian designers now specify engineered wood over solid hardwood — its layered core resists the warping that humidity causes in a single slab of timber. Here's what's underfoot.

WEAR LAYER UV lacquer / aluminium oxide REAL WOOD VENEER 0.6mm–6mm — teak, oak or walnut PLYWOOD / HDF CORE Cross-laid layers resist warping BALANCING BACK Stabilises the plank underfoot 30–50 YEAR LIFESPAN depending on veneer thickness & site upkeep

Care Rituals

Keeping a wood floor beautiful for decades

Small habits protect a big investment. Four rules our site teams hand every client at handover.

Dry & damp — never wet

Clean with a soft dry or barely-damp mop. Standing water is the single biggest cause of cupping and swelling.

Keep it out of direct sun

Prolonged UV exposure fades and dries wood unevenly. Use curtains or UV film on west-facing windows.

Pad furniture feet

Felt pads under chairs and tables prevent the scuffs and gouges that add up over years of small movements.

Control indoor humidity

Aim for consistent conditions below 60% RH. In coastal or monsoon-heavy cities, this single habit prevents most seasonal gapping.

Neev Spaces interior design studio project

Neev Spaces Private Limited is a full-service interior design firm headquartered in Morabadi, Ranchi, dedicated to transforming residential homes, commercial establishments and turnkey projects into thoughtfully crafted environments.

We were founded to bridge the gap between conceptual architectural design and on-site engineering precision — formalising a single-window, turnkey solution for a regional market that lacked standardised process. Every project runs on the same principle: combine global design sensibility with a genuine understanding of local context.

Our commitment to structural integrity and high-performance materials is backed by an Authorised Service Partnership with Saint-Gobain Gyproc, letting us offer data-backed solutions — from spatial acoustics and thermal comfort to precision modular installations — rather than traditional contracting alone.
